Film critic to discuss ‘Arsenic and Old Lace’

Film critic Dan Kimmel will visit Waterstone at Wellesley this weekend to discuss the classic, dark comedy, “Arsenic and Old Lace.”

The 1944 movie stars Cary Grant as Mortimer Brewster, a newlywed who learns that his eccentric aunts have been serving elderberry wine spiked with arsenic to lonely bachelors, after finding the corpse of one of the men in a window seat.

The film quickly introduces a whole cast of screwball characters, including another murderous relative, before eventually culminating in a happy Hollywood ending.

Directed by Frank Capra, who’s known for the films, “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,” “It Happened One Night” and “It’s a Wonderful Life,” the movie was adapted from Joseph Kesselring’s play of the same name.

Kimmel will visit on Sunday to discuss the film. Kimmel, an avid film connoisseur, is a past president of the Boston Society of Film Critics and the former co-chair of the Boston Online Film Critics Association. He was also written for Variety and teaches film at Suffolk University.

Old film enthusiasts shouldn’t miss this lecture!
