Bluegrass, film, engineering discussion and more

Happy New Year! We’re ringing in 2017 with a busy schedule of events in January, including jazz and bluegrass shows, an engineering lecture, and a screening and discussion of the 1942 film “Now, Voyager” starring Bette Davis.

On Jan. 5, we’ll welcome jazz performer and historian Peter Gerler for his “Jazz Funnies” show at 7:30 p.m. In this light-hearted show, attendees will watch and listen to a party-mix of jazz acts—older and newer—that will make you “forget your troubles, come on get happy.

Do you love the sound of banjo, fiddle, guitar, mandolin, and bass in harmony? Join us for a traditional bluegrass show with The Sandy Ridge Boys on Jan. 12 at 7:30 p.m. The talented quintet will recreate the sounds of Flatt & Scruggs, The Stanley Brothers, Jimmy Martin, and even Chuck Berry, as well as many of the contemporary bluegrass bands playing today.

Then, on Jan. 23, we’ll host Dr. Dean Manno, Provost and Dean of Faculty at the Olin College of Engineering, for his presentation “Changes in Engineering Education” at 4 p.m. Dr. Manno’s areas of interest include computational thermal-fluid dynamics, power generation systems, electronics thermal energy management, and engineering curriculum development.

And, on Jan. 29 at 2:20 p.m., acclaimed film critic Dan Kimmel will return to screen and discuss one of Bette Davis’ most beloved films, “Now, Voyager.” Former co-chair of the Boston Online Film Critics Association, Kimmel is currently a correspondent for Variety and NorthShoreMovies.net. He is the author of seven books and formerly served as editor at the Jewish Advocate.
