An Inside Look at Our Unique Arts & Crafts Architectural Design

We talk a lot about the Waterstone at Wellesley difference and how it relates to the luxurious lifestyle you’ll find at our breathtaking community in Wellesley, MA. Much of our difference revolves around the upscale aspects of living here, but we don’t want to forget one very big difference that sets us apart from other senior living communities: our unique Arts & Crafts design.

“So many of the questions we get from visitors and potential residents is about the design of our building,” says Kristine Tilton, Executive Director of Waterstone at Wellesley. “Our vision was to emulate the simplicity of design and hand of the artist that defined the Arts & Crafts movement. By choosing this style, it allowed us to weave in local materials and other touches that reflect our location and area, as well as elevate the aesthetic for our residents.”

The Arts & Crafts Movement

The Arts & Crafts style, also known as The Arts and Crafts Movement, isn’t actually one single style. It’s many different styles that focus on one unified intellectual approach. That approach revolves around pairing informality with culture, casualness with refinement and using natural materials to evoke a sense of being one with nature.

This artistic and social movement developed in Europe and Great Britain in the mid-1800s, and then took a foothold in the United States at the beginning of the 20th century. The style encompasses a variety of mediums, from interior design to decorative arts to publishing to jewelry, wallpaper, furniture – you name it, it was probably in the Craftsman style at some point. However, housing is where the design really took a stronghold.

Here are some of the common architectural features that define the Arts & Crafts style:

  • Low-pitched roof lines, hipped or gabled roof
  • Decorative brackets or exposed rafters
  • Front porch beneath extension of main roof
  • Square columns supporting roof that taper
  • Double-hung or casement windows
  • Design motifs a la Frank Lloyd Wright
  • Shingled roofs
  • Hand-crafted woodwork or stone as a design feature
  • Mixed materials throughout structure

Designing Waterstone at Wellesley

When the plans for Waterstone began, local firm Elkus Manfredi Architects was tasked with creating a building as meaningful and rich as the lifestyle offered within. The firm created a building in a timeless, sleek style featuring stone, wood and other natural materials that reflect the Wellesley area. Careful attention to detail was threaded throughout every aspect of the blueprints, from rich interior woodwork, luxury appointments and premium finishes.

Here’s what John Martin, principal of Elkus Manfredi Architects, had to say about the design of Waterstone:

“We designed the buildings to touch each of the senses, with particular attention to softening and enhancing the acoustics; rich, interesting materials to touch and feel; fresh, natural ventilation for air quality; open kitchens for tailored and specialized cuisine; and carefully considering framing interior and exterior views along the beautiful wooded banks of the Charles River,” says Martin. “Together, we have created an organic, sustainable place that will foster healthy and meaningful lifestyles. The buildings create inviting spaces not only inside, but also in between them. Outdoor courts and yards provide spatial experiences for residents and guests. They are made with a natural material palette of local fieldstone, vernacular New England clapboard siding, and oversized loft-like windows to allow daylight deep into all of the interior spaces. Wellesley is an iconic New England town, reflecting the values and traditions of the founding of our democracy, and I would like to think that our architecture manifests those qualities in a built form.”

When it came time to design the interior of Waterstone, we partnered with Wellesley Design Consultants, a local design company known for their refined approach and thoughtful style. The group drew inspiration from the building itself, as well as the river and trees that surround our property.

Here is what Ann Webb-Johnson, President and Design Principal of Wellesley Design Consultants, had to say about the modernized version of Arts & Crafts style showcased at Waterstone at Wellesley:

“We wanted Waterstone to feel warm, spacious, comfortable and vibrant, and as welcoming as one’s home or  favorite club,” says Webb-Johnson. “The color schemes in the common areas flow into the residential corridors to give the building a unified design. We incorporated many solutions to the interior environment that make life easier as we grow older, but these will be done in such a way to create an interior that is both timeless and current. The community feels very much a part of the greater community at large, and its proximity to the shops and restaurants on Washington Street reinforce this.”
